I have lived in Mumbai for a couple of years though...

Dheepak did you find a dog to adopt? Are you going for a puppy or an adult?

I met a wonderful 18-20 month old Black Lab named Tabby. He is a beautiful and healthy dog. He was little overweight probably that he was not getting enough exercise. I liked him very much and wanted to bring him home but my wife was scared of him because of his size.

Post we meeting Tabby, we bumped into Vet at a Pet store. He gave all reasons against bringing home an adult dog.. that they cant be trained or they can have some disease, we'll not know the history of the dog etc etc.. The vet managed to convince my wife to bring home a Puppy than a abandonded dog. Here comes the best part.. after this he tries to sell one from the litter he recently had for a hefty sum that too without KCI papers.

Long story short.. I want a rescued dog but my wife wantes a puppy.. The arguement continues.. Hope we'll resolve this soon..

first, Welcome... and hi ! I'm veronica.
And now, I'd rather suggest you NoT to bring labrador. I mean, Yes ..they are cute, and playfull and stuff and so famous!
But. That's what the internet says.
We never had dogs earlier. My lab- sasha is our first pet. We brought her home when she was just 5 weeks.
You won't believe it, but the kids were afraid of that pup ...even all of us were nervous about what's right and whats not ! Damn, we were so confused.

I personally feel that Labs are though famous for there friendly nature and loyalty. but, They are not easily trainable. They do not listen to you, and do what they feel like (I'm talking about puppies here. I've not had my experience with adult dogs). As they are sniffers, its not easy to have a walk in the park with them without having all the things on their nose!
And for new pet owners, It becomes immensely difficult task to handle these highly energetic dogs !

Dog becomes an important part of family in no time.
So, friend...be careful before choosing you right partner. Do some real research- like talk to some dog owners or pet care centers. Do not trust the internet! .

And when it comes to your debate of pup vs. adult. I'm at you wife's side.
To rescue a dog- yeah! that's a brilliant and dear thought. But, for newbies...its not a good idea maybe. It may even occur that unintentionally you guys may frustate the dog ( cuz you are new, it won't be you fault at all!)...have a pup now, later on, when you feel confident about your skills, rescue some.

P.S. - I have no intention to offend lab lovers. Its my personal view point. You can have yours.
Here is a dog breed selector. It may help you.

Veronica, I guess you have it all wrong with your Lab. I've had dogs for 14 years now and being a Lab owner myself, I know how smart they are and how easy it is to train them. Check this out: Easy To Train Dog Breeds - Easiest To Train Dogs

As you mentioned Sasha is your first pet, I guess maybe you need to reflect on the way you've handled Sasha. If you have not managed to establish yourself as a pack leader, any dog will be as difficult as Sasha or maybe even more difficult. If you had a Dobe or a GSD, those dogs would assume the leader position in no time and will get aggressive and difficult to handle.

All dogs are sniffers and you need to train your dog to walk with you. Its your walk and not the dog's. You need to control and drive the walk and your dog should know that. Read this for more info: Loose Leash Walking | DogZone India: Let's Discuss Dogs

The internet is usually full of information provided by dog owners like us so I still trust the internet and believe that the information available is first hand and reliable. Think of it, this forum is on the internet and the information you provided is also through the internet. Any dog can get out of hands if not raised and handled properly. Even a small Chihuahua can get out of control, if the establishment of the owner as a leader does not happen.

You know there is a reason why Labs are one of the most popular dogs in the world.

I would recommend that you watch some videos (available on YouTube) of Cesar Milan and other training videos and you'll find that labs are a joy to own (just like any other breed) and for newbies, they make great pets as being friendly comes very naturally to them and they would go the distance to please their owners. :)

Yeah... I agree with you totally Gautam.
But, the thing is, that Dheepak who asked us to suggest him our ideas, We all game him what we feel.

I understand that every dog is different, just like us. It also depends a lot on the training and the care provided to that dog. But,
No doubt on that Labradors pull a lot more than other breeds, I've experienced it so many times. You can't deny it.

Your view point is ...well, yours. And I appreciate that. Maybe you have a lab, who is calm and peaceful or so. But, my Sasha, she is just exited for everything in this world, And that maybe because she is still so young and small. Its not her fault, infact we like it.
But for a new owner, its difficult. You have had 14 years with dogs, and maybe that's why you find this breed easy to handle.

    Anyways,
We are here to discus dogs, to share what we experience every day with our beloved pets buddies.

And I've worked allot on establishing myself as a pack leader, after Yuki helped me (Thanks Yuki ! :D). And I think I'm quite successful at that now.
And..and and.. chihuahua is though, a small breed, But BOY! they are so difficult to handle. They are counted as one of the most aggressive dogs , you know. (check out on the internet)

P.S - I still don't trust internet, but I do trust forums with real people having real view points. CHEERS FOR DOGZONE! ;)

I hope dheepak is reading this all.
It will definitely help him allot.

Oh you have no idea how excited Danny gets for everything. He is closing in on one year now but is still a pup at heart and will remain so for another 2-3 years maybe. The way you're describing Sasha, she is just like a perfect Lab. Always happy, friendly, hyper-active and excited for everything... :D

    Welcome to DogZone, Dheepak.
As you said this might be your first dog, go for the puppy, whatever the the type of breed you choose. It'll be easy for you to train and understand your dog when they are small. When you understand dogs and how to handle them in different situations, you can go adopt a adult dog.

a golden retriever is a good choice for a pet, either as a puppy or an adult. since they are very friendly and intelligent. they also adapt very well to new homes. ;) this is coming from a owner of 2 beautiful GRs. i lost my heart to them in an instant :p

Between the 3rd week - 2 1/2 months, the mothers teaches the pup, things that u can never train him for. That is why, u should NOT buy at a petshop where pups are separated at a early age frm the mum.

All the breeds can be trained very efficiently. I have some customers with the friendliest Rottweilers i have every seen. These huge Rotts are great with kids.

Just maintain discipline with ur pets and you should be fine :-D

I completely agree with Chaitanya... Any breed can be trained to be great pets provided we spend quality time and approach their handling in the right way. Apparently bulldogs are a little difficult to train according to most websites but here's an interesting video that shows that proper training can turn any dog into a superstar... :D

What these bulldogs can do is amazing....

Thanks a lots for all the inputs.
Shadow I m reading every single post on this thread. just didnt find time to reply. I agree with you on meeting owners and getting to know first hand information. I did meet a few owners and got to know loads.

Gautam All you people managed to do is give me some direction than confuse me. Cheers to that

I finally convinced myself to bring home a puppy. I realised that I dont know enough about dogs to rehabhilitate an abandoned dog. We have decided to bring home a Golden Retriever or a Labrador retriever. We'll be brings home a pet in end of october or early november.
